On May 29, 1952, during the 2nd Session of the 82nd Congress, Popular Democratic party Resident Commissioner Antonio Fernós-Isern of Puerto Rico (PPD-PR) introduced H.J.Res. 430 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. S.J.Res. 151 accompanied this bill in the Senate. The resolution sought the approval of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
During the 1 st Session of the 74th Congress, on January 3, 1935, Democrat and Socialist member of the conservative Coalición, Resident Commissioner Santiago Iglesias of Puerto Rico (D/Coalición-PR) introduced H.R. 1394 in the House Committee on the Territories. The status bill enabled Puerto Rican electors to form a territorial constitution and subsequent statehood.
On August 19, 1994, during the 2nd Session of the 103rd Congress, Democrat Representative Robert Torricelli of New Jersey (D-NJ) introduced H.R. 5005 in the House Committee on Natural Resources. This bill called for periodic status plebiscites in the United States territories and required congressional notification of the executive branch actions impacting the status of United States territories.
On March 2, 2021, during the 1st Session of the 117th Congress, Democrat Representative Darrenn Soto from Florida (D-FL) introduced H.R. 1522 (accompanied by S. 780 in the Senate) in the House Committee on Natural Resources. This status bill provided for the state of Puerto Rico into the Union.
On September 29, 1966, during the 2nd Session of the 89th Congress, Republican Representative Charles A. Mosher introduced H.R. 18096 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This status bill sought to provide the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union, on an equal footing with the original states.
On July 16, 1959, during the 1st Session of the 86th Congress, Democrat Senator Dennis Chavez of New Mexico (D-NM) introduced S. 2396 in the Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This bill required the Puerto Rican Commonwealth to conduct a local referendum to determine whether the people of Puerto Rico desired to be admitted into the Union as a state.
During the 2nd Session of the 77th Congress, on July 6, 1942, Democrat and member of the Puerto Rican conservative Coalición, Resident Commissioner Bolivar Pagan (D/Coalición-PR) introduced H.R. 7352 in the House Committee on Insular Affairs. This was an organic or territorial act.
On September 17, 1998, during the 2nd Session of the 105th Congress, Democrat Representative Robert Torricelli of New Jersey (D-NJ) introduced S.Res. 279 in the House Committee on Natural Resources. This resolution expressed the Senate’s support of the right of U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico toe express their desires for the future political status of Puerto Rico.
On April 12, 1983, during the 1st Session of the 98th Congress, Democrat Representative Roland V. Dellums of California (D-CA) introduced H.J.Res. 232 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The resolution affirmed the right to self-determination and the decolonization of Puerto Rico.
On May 15, 1945, during the 1st Session of the 79th Congress, Democrat Senator Millard E. Tydings of Maryland (D-MD) introduced S. 1002 in the Senate Committee on Territories and Insular Affairs. This bill accompanied H.R. 3237 and was known as the Tydings-Piñero Bill. The bill called for a status plebiscite in Puerto Rico.
