This bill enabled the people of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to determine the political status of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
On May 6, 1963, during the 1st Session of the 88th Congress, Democrat Representative William F. Ryan of New York (D-NY) introduced H.R. 6076 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This bill sought to create a Commission on the Status of Puerto Rico to establish a procedure for the prompt settlement, in a democratic manner, of the political status of Puerto Rico.
On January 3, 1900, during the 1st Session of the 56th Congress, Republican Senator Joseph B. Foraker of Ohio (R-OH) introduced S. 2016 in the Senate Committee on Pacific Islands and Puerto Rico. The bill was an organic or territorial act.
On April 24, 1947, during the 1st Session of the 80th Congress, Democrat Senator Millard E.Tydings of Maryland (D-MD) introduced S. 1158 in the Senate Committee on Public Lands. H.R. 4404 accompanied this bill in the House. This status bill provided for the withdrawal of sovereignty of the United States over the island of Puerto Rico and the recognition of its independence.
On April 26, 2006, during the 2nd Session of the 190th Congress, Republican Senator Mel Martinez of Florida (R-FL) introduced S. 2661 in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. This bill provided for a plebiscite in Puerto Rico on the status of Puerto Rico.
On August 1, 1980, during the 2nd Session of the 96th Congress, Democrat Representative Roland V. Dellums of California (D-CA) introduced H.J.Res. 592 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The resolution affirmed the right to self-determination and the decolonization of Puerto Rico.
On July 26, 1950, during the 2nd Session of the 81st Congress, Representative Cleaveland M Baily (D-West Virginia) introduced H.R. 9247 in the Committee on Public Lands. This statehood status bill provided for the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union.
During the 2nd Session of the 67th Congress, on January 16, 1922, Republican Representative John I. Nolan of California (R-CA) introduced H.R.9934 in the House Committee on Insular Affairs. This was a status bill.
On May 9, 1990, during the 1st Session of the 101st Congress, Democrat Delegate Ron de Lugo of Virginia (D-VI) introduced H.R. 4765 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs and Rules. This legislation authorized an island wide plebiscitary vote on multiple status options for Puerto Rico.
On June 27, 2018, during the 2nd Session of the 115th Congress, Republican and New Progressive Party Resident Commissioner Jenifer González-Colón of Puerto Rico (R/PNP-PR) introduced H.R. 6246 in the House Committee on Natural Resources. This status bill enabled the admission of the territory of Puerto Rico into the Union as a state on an equal footing.
