On March 18, 2021, during the 1st Session of the 117th Congress, Democrat Senator Robert Menendez introduced S. 865 (accompanied by H.R. 2070 in the House) in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. This bill recognized the right of the people of Puerto Rico to call a status convention through which the people would exercise their natural right to self-determination, and to establish a mechanism for congressional consideration of such decision.
On May 12, 1987, during the 1st Session of the 100th Congress, Republican Senator Robert J. Dole of Kansas (R-KS) introduced S. 1182 in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. The status bill provided for a referendum in Puerto Rico on the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union as a state.
On June 30, 1987, during the 1st Session of the 100th Congress, Republican Representative Robert J. Lagomarsino of California introduced H.R. 2849 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The status bill provided for a referenda and development of enabling legislation regarding the incorporation of the Commonwealth into the Union as a state.
On January 31, 1985, during the 1st Session of the 99th Congress, Democrat Representative Roland V. Dellums of California (D-CA) introduced H.J.Res. 120 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The resolution affirmed the right to self-determination and the decolonization of Puerto Rico.

The resolution affirmed the right to self-determination and the decolonization of Puerto Rico.
On August 2, 1979, during the 1st Session of the 96th Congress, 8 representatives co-sponsored this resolution and introduced H.Con.Res. 165 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This concurrent resolution reaffirmed Congress’ commitment to enable the people of Puerto Rico to determine their own political future.
On August 1, 1980, during the 2nd Session of the 96th Congress, Democrat Representative Roland V. Dellums of California (D-CA) introduced H.J.Res. 592 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The resolution affirmed the right to self-determination and the decolonization of Puerto Rico.
On March 30, 1977, during the 1st Session of the 95th Congress, Democrat Representative Roland V. Dellums of California (D-CA) introduced H.J. Res. 367 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The status bill sought to provide independence for Puerto Rico.
On January 19, 1977, during the 1st Session of the 95th Congress, Republican Representative Philip E. Ruppe of Michigan (R-MI) introduced H.R. 2201 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This status bill enabled the people of Puerto Rico to form a constitution, a state government and to be subsequently admitted into the Union.
On July 1, 1976, during the 2nd Session of the 94th Congress, Democrat Representative Roland V. Dellums of California (D-CA) introduced H.J. Res. 1010 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This status bill provided for the independence of Puerto Rico.
