On May 16, 1945, during the 1st Session of the 79th Congress, Democrat and Popular Democratic Party Resident Commissioner Jesus T. Pinero of Puerto Rico (D/PPD-PR) introduced H.R. 3237 in the House Committee on Insular Affairs. This bill accompanied S. 1002 and was known as the Tydings-Piñero Bill. The bill called for a status plebiscite in Puerto Rico.
During the 2nd Session of the 57th Congress, on June 13, 1914, Democrat Representative Willard Saulsbury Jr. of Delaware (D-DE) introduced S.5845 in the Senate Committee on Pacific Islands and Porto Rico. The bill was an organic or territorial act.
On April 5, 1989, during the 1st Session of the 101st Congress, Democrat Senator John B. Johnston of Louisiana (D-LA) introduced S. 711 in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. This legislation authorized an island wide plebiscitary vote on multiple status options for Puerto Rico.
On February 4, 2015, during the 1st Session of the 114th Congress, Democrat and New Progressive Party Resident Commissioner Pedro R. Pierluisi of Puerto Rico (D/PNP-PR) introduced H.R. 727 in the House Committee on Natural Resources. This status bill set forth a process for Puerto Rico to be admitted as a state of the Union.
On October January 3, 1989, during the 1st Session of the 91st Congress, Democrat Representative Richard L. Ottinger of New York (R-NY) introduced H.R. 499 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This status bill sought to provide the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union, on an equal footing with the original states.
On March 2, 1954, during the 2nd Session of the 83rd Congress, Republican Representative Page H. Belcher of Oklahoma (R-OK) introduced H.Res. 455 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This resolution called for an island wide referendum on whether Puerto Rico should become totally independent from the United States.
During the 2nd Session of the 74th Congress, on April 23, 1936, Democrat Senator Millard E. Tydings of Maryland (D-MD) introduced S. 4529 in the Senate Committee on Territories and Insular Possessions. This bill authorized a status referendum on the question of Puerto Rican independence.
On September 30, 1994, during the 2nd Session of the 103rd Congress, Democrat Senator Paul M. Simon of Illinois (D-Il) introduced S.Con.Res. 75 in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. This resolution rejected the enhanced Commonwealth option.
On March 16, 2021, during the 1st Session of the 117th Congress, Democrat Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico (D-NM) introduced S. 780 (accompanied by H.R. 1522 in the House) in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. This status bill provided for the state of Puerto Rico into the Union.
On May 1, 1963, during the 1st Session of the 88th Congress, Democrat Representative Jacob H. Gilbert of New York (D-NY) introduced H.R. 5991 in the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. This bill sought to create a Commission on the Status of Puerto Rico to establish a procedure for the prompt settlement, in a democratic manner, of the political status of Puerto Rico.
