On August 4, 1948, during the 2nd Session of the 80th Congress, American Laborite Representative Vito A. Marcantonio of New York (R-NY) introduced H.R. 7111 in the House Committee on Public Lands. This status bill provided for the withdrawal of sovereignty of the United States over the island of Puerto Rico and the recognition of its independence.
On June 18, 1943, during the 1st Session of the 78th Congress, Democrat Resident Commissioner Bolivar Pagan of Puerto Rico (D-PR) introduced H.R. 3002 in the House Committee on the Territories. This status bill called for the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union on an equal footing with the states.
During the 2nd Session of the 77th Congress, on July 6, 1942, Democrat and member of the Puerto Rican conservative Coalición, Resident Commissioner Bolivar Pagan (D/Coalición-PR) introduced H.R. 7352 in the House Committee on Insular Affairs. This was an organic or territorial act.
During the 1st Session of the 76th Congress, on July 10, 1939, Democrat and Socialist member of the conservative Coalición, Resident Commissioner Santiago Iglesias of Puerto Rico (D/Coalición-PR) introduced H.R. 7117 in the House Committee on Insular Affairs. This was a status bill calling for the admission of Puerto Rico into the Union on an equal footing with the states.
During the 2nd Session of the 74th Congress, on April 23, 1936, Democrat Senator Millard E. Tydings of Maryland (D-MD) introduced S. 4529 in the Senate Committee on Territories and Insular Possessions. This bill authorized a status referendum on the question of Puerto Rican independence.
During the 1 st Session of the 74th Congress, on January 3, 1935, Democrat and Socialist member of the conservative Coalición, Resident Commissioner Santiago Iglesias of Puerto Rico (D/Coalición-PR) introduced H.R. 1394 in the House Committee on the Territories. The status bill enabled Puerto Rican electors to form a territorial constitution and subsequent statehood.
During the 2nd Session of the 67th Congress, on January 19, 1922, Republican Representative Philip P. Campbell of Kansas (R-KS) introduced H.R.9995 in the House Committee on Insular Affairs. This was a status bill. S. 3137 was its companion bill in the Senate.

This bill called for periodic status plebiscites in the United States territories and required congressional notification of the executive branch actions impacting the status of United States territories.
